Accident claims online could increase

Antonia Torr, Legal Editor

A recent report shows that one in every 27 children will suffer from sort of road traffic accident or be killed as a result of an accident. Researchers further found that children from deprived areas of England were five times more likely to be injured in an accident than those who live in more affluent areas.

There were some areas of particular concern. For example, Preston had one in every 206 children killed or injured compared to the national average of one in 427 children. The report was compiled by Road Safety Analysis, which is a not-for-profit organisation. There were concerns of the under-reporting of road accidents, which if true, could mean that accident claims online would increase.

It said: "The Department for Transport acknowledges that [the under-reporting of casualties] could mean that up to five times more casualties occur on the roads than are reported to the police."

The report further found that the risk of an accident increased as children grew older and that boys were more likely than girls to have a road traffic accident.

Additionally, the report emphasised that there were certain months that had a higher number of casualties and fatalist than other months. Summer months were higher than the winter, with August being the lowest which "could be due to fewer children being in the country at this time of year".

Dan Campsall, director of Road Safety Analysis, said: “The results of this study show a worrying discrepancy between different parts of the country. Children in some areas experience considerably higher risk from road traffic crashes than others who might be living just over the border."
