E.Coli outbreak could have been avoided!

Antonia Torr, Legal Editor

A damning report was released yesterday which illustrated that dozens of cases of the potentially fatal 0157 strain of E. coli could have been avoided if the authorities had reacted sooner.

The report was chaired by Profesor George Griffin, a professor of infectious diseases at St George's University London. Professor George Griffin warned that those regulations which governed petting or 'open' farms were not robust enough to prevent a similar outbreaks from occurring again.

Approximately 5 million people visit open farms each year in Britain

The 250 page report also places responsibility on GP's who treated some of the victims. GP's are reported as telling parents their children would get better on their own only for them to deterioriate rapidly.

The report commented that there were 'unacceptable delays' by the Health Protection Agency in setting up an outbreak control team and a 'failure in public health leadership'.

Majority of the cases were children under the age of 10, many of whom have developed permanent damage to their kidneys and could require a transplant in the future. The outbreak was so severe that every spealialist hospital bed to treat children with serious kidney problems in London and the South East was filled with cases from Godstone Farm. Many families are seeking legal action.

Those who have suffered health related damages could potentially make a personal injury claim. If you require a personal injury solicitor, then give us a call on 0845 50 50 025.
