Chris Topping / Partner and Head of Department

0151 282 1700

Chris has been one of the Partners in the firm since 1993. He was a trainee solicitor with Jackson & Canter under the watchful eye of Andrew Holroyd as his principal. Having spent four years in the Princes Road office Chris then managed one of our branches in Scotland Road before moving to the city centre from where he now practices.

Chris is now in charge of our Actions against the Police department which has developed a national reputation for dealing with complaints and claims of Police malpractice. Chris has been recognised in the Chambers Guide as one of the leading solicitors in the country in this area of work. His notable cases include Keegan –v- United Kingdom in which the European Court made it clear that Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights needed to be at the forefront of Police thinking before people’s homes were raided. Chris was the solicitor in the case Queen on behalf of Aru –v- Chief Constable of Merseyside Police which defined the routes of appeal in judicial review proceedings.

Chris was, until recently, a member of the Law Society Mental Health Tribunal Panel. He has conducted over 500 tribunals representing those whose liberty has been removed under the Mental Health Act 1983. Although Chris no longer conducts as many tribunals he is still involved in Judicial Review proceedings and compensation claims arising from the misuse of the Act. A number of the most important cases in the leading textbook, The Mental Health Manual by Richard Jones, have been taken by Chris and his colleagues.

As with the other partners in the firm Chris is committed to ensuring that the rights of individuals are not removed or abused by the state.
