Michael is heading up Jackson & Canter's new Commercial Team based at Church Street, Liverpool. His specialisms include Intellectual Property (IP) and Media Law.

Although he undertook a criminal pupillage when training to be a barrister he decided to switch to Commercial and was able to gain training experience at GPT Ltd (later Marconi) in Liverpool back in 1993 where he gained some knowledge and practical experience of IP in a corporate environment. He went on to study IP at Masters level and received a Distinction from the University of Liverpool in 1995.

After a short stint at Liverpool Cotton Traders, Meredith Jones (once the proud inhabitants of Yorkshire House) he commenced work at Halliwells in Manchester acting for a number of household names such as Astra Zeneca, UMIST, Kwik Fit and Dolphin Bathrooms.  He moved across the road to Cobbetts in 1998 where he spent 7 years dealing with all types of contentious and non-contentions IP matters, working for Henri Lloyd, Tyco, Matalan, Chelsea FC and Argos. He also undertook a considerable amount of ICT work for software manufacturers and resellers.

He has been involved in well known reported cases including NewzBin (No 1) which involved file sharing and copyright infringement. He has also defended a large number of software resellers who have been accused of copyright infringement with regards to allegations of parallel importation and selling software licences. He was involved in the reported case of Microsoft v Ling and others. He has defended actions brought by Microsoft and Adobe and has been able to find a pragmatic solution benefitting the client.

He has also acquired experience of domain name disputes and has utilised the services of Nominet as well as acting for claimants and defendants on passing off matters. He acted for the successful Defendants in the case of Excavation & Contracting Limited, where the High Court judge ruled that there was an ability to have split reputation in the same geographical area.

Michael with his Team provides a comprehensive IP Audit for all types of businesses in order for them to assess their IP rights and advise on protection/commercialisation.

On the Media side, Michael has acted in a number of high profile Libel actions including:  Steven Bennett v BBC, Wendy Ainscow v The Mail, Cambridge v Makin and GMB and Tierney v News Group. He has also acted for newspapers and authors as well as prominent local politicians on libel matters.
