Having spent many years in the medical profession as a doctor, I changed my career to become a Solicitor, joining Quality Solicitors Oliver & Co in 2007, before becoming a Partner in 2009. My role is to head the Clinical Negligence Team as well as manage my own files, which I greatly enjoy.

I qualified as a doctor in 1995 and started my basic surgical training in 1997. As part of this surgical training, I worked in various areas of medicine including orthopaedic surgery, urology, general surgery, vascular surgery and accident and emergency medicine. I also obtained my Advanced Trauma Life Support qualification, which I greatly enjoyed.

I qualified as a basic surgeon, becoming a Surgical Member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, in 2001.

Having always had an interest in the law, I decided to obtain a law degree and I qualified as a solicitor in 2005, specializing in medical negligence claims.

As one of the few Solicitors in the country who is also a qualified doctor, my expertise helps me provide my clients with the best possible advice throughout the lifetime of their claim. Generally speaking, I aim to provide a friendly and efficient service, keeping my clients informed throughout by way of regular contact and by remaining approachable at all times. I am involved in a wide range of cases including:

  • Surgical failures and injuries
  • Missed or delayed diagnoses (of fractures, cancers and other illnesses)
  • Birth injuries (such as cerebral palsy)
  • Failed dental treatment and injuries

My medical knowledge and experience is of great assistance for all the clinical negligence claims we deal with in our team.
I am generally able to get to grips with the medical issues quickly and decide early on whether a claim has any prospects of success.
My medical knowledge also allows us to assist clients in drafting a letter of complaint to their healthcare provider to try and get a better idea of what happened with their treatment.

Once we have agreed to act for a client, I am able to identify the most relevant pages in the medical records quickly and make sure the independent experts we instruct are able to focus on the most important aspects of the claim.

For example in one of my cases, my client attended his General Practice on many occasions over the course of many months with the same problem, during which time he saw six different General Practitioners, all of whom negligently failed to make the correct diagnosis of renal failure. It was difficult to identify what losses arose for my client out of each of the GPs negligent treatments, but my client was successful in his claim and received compensation.
