What is the firm culture at QualitySolicitors AcklamBond?

“There’s a genuine positive buzz in the office and a great sense of teamwork,” a colleague recently commented to me.

This was great to hear, especially since we are in the 'January blues' period when Christmas has only just passed and this week has been the first full working week back in the office.

So, this got me thinking about my colleagues and the working environment we attempt to create to ensure that everyone feels supported, progresses in their career and can have a work life balance. For a small firm we actually have a very impressive list of why I think our firm is a great place to work.

We have a young dynamic management team who are extremely proactive, understand the ethos of the firm and the direction we want to take and cascade that down to everyone in the firm.

We don’t just pay lip service to support - we genuinely care what’s happening to our colleagues; and that’s important given the amount of time spent at work. We are not just colleagues but friends; we support each other during personal difficult times as well as celebrating positive and happy events. This creates a close knit team who work well together and are happy to help out not only in their own department, but across other departments to get the job done.

There are lots of articles in the legal press recently bemoaning the lack of equality and diversity in law firms, especially at senior level. One article recently looked at a service set up to help young trainees in ‘cultish firms’ who were afraid to seek help in their own firm! 

These concepts are so foreign to us; a high proportion of women hold senior positions within our firm, including at management and director level. And these are working mums who have to balance the demands of a stressful role at work with the demands of family life. I think that this is where our support comes in to play together with the very flexible working hours we promote, which allows mums (and dads!!) to attend school assemblies, pick their kids up from school and have that family time whilst being able to work later in the evening.

As for our young ones, we always have a open door policy and we want them to always come and ask for help and support - which is why they can always contact us if we are out of the office. How can they learn if we are not there to support them? Recently all our young members of staff have progressed beyond their original roles to new or expanded roles and it’s great to see their confidence growing.

As for equality and diversity, we encourage and embrace the same from assisting people with disabilities and mental health issues to having an openly gay man in the senior management team. This helps to break down barriers and helps us to have that personal touch with clients.

I’m really proud of the team - they step up when needed, look out for each other and genuinely care. That’s why clients get the high level of client service which we deliver, because our team cares.
