Religious requirements and the law

How does the law affect religious requirements?

One example, is in the construction industry where the wearing of protective headgear is mandatory.

However, Sikhs wearing turbans are excluded from this ruling on the grounds of racial discrimination.

Royal Assent was given to the Deregulation Act 2015 on 26 March 2015 and from 1 October 2015, this exemption has been extended to cover all workplaces, as part of a number of specifications from 1 October 2015.

Please be aware that, from this point onwards, should you try to impose the wearing of a safety helmet in any workplace (and not just a construction site) on a turban-wearing Sikh, you will be discriminating against that person under the Equality Act 2010.
