The region’s most inspiring individuals were recognised for their bravery and achievements on Friday 16 October at the Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards.
Around 800 people (a hundred more than attended last year’s event) including celebrities, corporate sponsors and a raft of fundraising supporters joined the Awards Winners at a spectacular star-studded ceremony and gala dinner, at New Dock Hall in Leeds. The event was hosted by BBC Breakfast Business Journalist Steph McGovern and supported by event Ambassadors, the evergreen Chuckle Brothers
Originally launched in 2011, Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards is now firmly established on the Yorkshire Calendar as a major annual fundraising event. The occasion is steadily growing in popularity with this year’s event raising a phenomenal total of £115,000! This includes extremely generous match-funding from St. James's Place Wealth Management – and exceeds last year's total by £15,000! Funds raised will be distributed via the Yorkshire committee of the St. James’s Place Foundation, contributing hugely towards helping community groups and organisations in the Yorkshire region.
Once again Scunthorpe-based law firm, QualitySolicitors Bradbury Roberts & Raby was honoured to sponsor the Special Recognition Award for 13-18 Year Olds and representatives from the firm attended the Award Ceremony along with business associates, the team from Gail Spavin Wealth Management, also based in Scunthorpe. QualitySolicitors Bradbury Roberts & Raby’s Partner and Head of the Family Law Department, Sue Rands presented the firm’s sponsored award on the night to worthy winner Lawrence Nicholas.
Nineteen year old Lawrence has cerebral palsy and diabetes – but maintains an incredibly positive attitude and a great love of sport. Despite battling extreme pain and undergoing rigorous medical procedures, he attended the 2012 London Olympics and has been working with a personal trainer, which has helped him to progress to swinging golf clubs and riding his tricycle. He’s keen to motivate others and writes his blog “Mission Impossible: Living with chronic pain”.
Clare Appleyard, Assistant Practice Manager for QualitySolicitors Bradbury Roberts & Raby, said:
“It was such an honour to be invited to attend such a worthy and prestigious event. The children are so brave and their stories of hope and courage moved me to tears. Well done to our inspirational award winner Lawrence. What an absolutely unforgettable night for all involved.”
Gail Spavin of Gail Spavin Wealth Management added:
"The children were absolutely the stars of the evening. How fantastic getting the recognition they deserve despite their adversity. The money they helped raise will continue to fund other children in need which is also a great achievement on their part. The evening was a spectacular event and I am very proud to be part of it."
St. James’s Place Foundation is a grant making charity which has raised and distributed in excess of £40 million to good causes over the last 24 years. The vast majority of funds raised come from fundraising or generous donations made by the Partners and employees of St. James’s Place and are matched pound for pound by the company.
