Winner Joanne Sowerby & Runner Up Lorna Fillingham are presented with their certificates in the North Lincolnshire Community Champion Awards for Outstanding Achievement Adult.
QualitySolicitors Bradbury Roberts & Raby is very proud to have sponsored this Award for the 5th consecutive year and last night, we were honoured to celebrate another night of amazing people and their achievements, in a spectacular ceremony at the Baths Hall in Scunthorpe.
The awards were split into four categories – Volunteers, Achievement, Community and Inspiration, which covered 22 individual awards, all sponsored by a local business.
Our Outstanding Achievement Adult Award Winner, Joanne Sowerby, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and understandably felt very isolated during this dreadful time. However after she recovered, Joanne used her experience to empower others and set up the Bosom Family Support Group for people to share their thoughts and even have a laugh together in diffcult times.
In addition, despite being a mum to three children and working full time, Joanne has organised a wide range of activities including ballroom dancing, watching Scunthorpe United, a fashion show and fundraiser to help her support group. Incredibly she's also set up a choir called Bosom Bells. One attendee of the group says: "To be able to talk to other people that have, or are, going through the same as myself helped me enormously to deal with this awful disease." So this just shows how you can turn an unimaginably difficult situation into a heartwarming success story and benefit so many others.
Lorna Fillingham is a well-deserving Award Runner Up. As well as caring for her son, Lorna also looks after her disabled daughter, Ellie-May, who has been the driving force in a successful campaign to improve disabled facilities.
Lorna is well known in the North Lincolnshire area for exceptional achievements. These include helping to run an online support group for parents with disabled children and campaigning vigorously through local media, meeting with MP's and enlisting a petition of thousands of signatures in an appeal to the local council to help with funding. As a result, North Lincolnshire Council have committed no less than £90,000 to build adequate toilet and baby changing facilities, which will clearly make a big difference to peoples' lives.
