The occasion also explored the many ways in which people can support the charity, one of them being its award-winning Will Scheme.

As Barnardo's legal partner for North Lincolnshire, QualitySolicitors Bradbury Roberts & Raby was delighted to be invited to co-host the event, in a grand finale to our Barnardo’s annual October Will Month Campaign.

Victoria Norman, Partner and Head of our Wills & Probate Department, gave a thought provoking talk about about the importance of having your affairs in order and explained how the Will Scheme works.  Simply put, for anyone over 55, a basic Will can be written free of charge under the Scheme and all that is asked is that supporters consider leaving a gift in their Will to Barnardo’s.

Victoria was accompanied by her team’s Associate Solicitor, Sarah Inman, who were both available to answer any legal queries and arrange Will appointments for anyone who was interested.

Kerry Mitchell, Barnardo’s Assistant Director for Children’s Services East introduced an exciting new project which is due to launch imminently in Scunthorpe, the details of which are still being finalised.

A definite highlight of the day was Barnardo’s charismatic ‘old girl’, Eleni Simpson who, at 80 years old, generously took the time to captivate everyone with her emotional but humorous account of overcoming a difficult start in life, by being raised in Barnardo’s care.

One surprise guest was Norman the peacock, who made everyone smile as he cheekily claimed a seat outside the dining room window to watch the proceedings! Once the presentations were over, people were treated to a delicious buffet lunch and enjoyed free access to Normanby Hall’s museum and it’s beautiful grounds.

Barnardo’s Regional Relationship Manager, Rosy Dick, offered a fascinating insight into the charity’s history and covered the variety of ways in which people can lend support. She highlighted the fact that approximately 80% of people do not have a Will and, despite around 78% of us generously donating to charity during our lifetimes, the figure of those remembering charities in their Will (a truly vital source of income to all charities, including Barnardo’s) remains significantly lower at around 8%, giving everyone food for thought.

Moving forward all charities are aiming to raise awareness of the statistic and double this amount, which would raise an incredible £2bn a year for the causes we love.

Debbie Connolly, our Marketing & Business Development Manager, who helped to publicise and attended the event added:

“We’re extremely proud to be part of a Will Scheme that has generated a phenomenal £15M in estimated future income for Barnardo’s across the QualitySolicitors network! It’s been exciting to work with Rosy on such a successful event, because any support people can offer, whether that be through the Will Scheme or other activities will really help to change the lives of vulnerable children in the UK.”

Don’t worry if you missed out on Will Month or this Special Event - you can take advantage of the Will Scheme all year round and make a difference to the lives of vulnerable children, by giving us a call on 01724 854000, or by using the enquiry form on our dedicated Barnardo's page.
