Average annual residential care fees are now more than GBP33,000 after a year in which fees have risen by a record 9.6 per cent, according to a survey by Prestige Nursing and Care.

There is significant regional variation, with eastern England being the most expensive at GBP40,800 and Yorkshire and Humberside the cheapest, at GBP29,000.

Receiving care at home is a much cheaper alternative, at typically GBP9,156 a year for 12 hours of care each week.
