What is a tenancy agreement?

A tenancy agreement is a contract between a tenant and a landlord that clarifies responsibilities on both sides so that, moving forward, no one is in any doubt where they stand.

However, if you're a landlord, there is not just the tenancy agreement to consider. As a security measure, landlords are legally entitled to request a deposit before letting a property to a tenant and, providing the terms of the tenancy agreement have been met, this should be returned to the tenant at the end of the lease. Landlords are now legally required to place the deposit in one of three government-backed tenancy deposit schemes.
