Getting to know you - Simon Garner

We have the second person up in a new series of posts on our blog - 'getting to know you' - each month we'll be catching up with one of our lawyers, and asking them 10 questions, about themselves, the law and their favourite things.

Next up is Assistant Solicitor in our Commercial Property team, Simon Garner.
  1. What is your favourite part of the job?

I really enjoy seeing a transaction through from start to finish and guiding the client throughout the proceess. Transactions can often be complicated and it’s often very challenging to ensure you get the exact result you want. However, it’s very rewarding when you have a happy client once a transaction has completed after a great deal of work.

  2. What made you choose law?

My first experience of law came when studying the subject at A-Level and my interest grew from there. I tried to get as much experience as I could working in different sectors of the law and work out where I wanted to specialise.

I thought law would be a good career to go into because no day is ever the same, you get to interact with different people and you are always trying to solve problems for clients.

I always wanted a career that was both challenging and rewarding and I’ve definitely found that in law.

  3. How long have you been with the firm?

I started in June 2016 as a newly qualified solicitor in the Commercial Property team.

  4. What’s the most memorable case you’ve worked on?

As I’m relatively new to the firm, I haven’t had the opportunity to work on too many cases from start to finish but I’ve certainly enjoyed working with the different clients that have instructed Howlett Clarke to see their matters through to the end and to achieve their desired outcomes.

  5. Why did you specialise in Commercial Property?

Prior to my training contract, I worked as a paralegal in insurance litigation for over two years. Whilst I enjoyed doing this, I didn’t have the opportunity to build long-term relationships with clients.

In contrast, Commercial Property offers me the chance to build long-term relationships with clients and work on a variety of different transactions with both individuals and companies.

  6. What’s your favourite food?

I’m not too fussy when it comes to food but I do enjoy a Sunday Roast with all the trimmings.

  7. Favourite season?

    Winter because of Christmas!

  8. What is your most favourite word?

I don’t think I’ve got a favourite to be honest. Although, when the other side in a transaction says ‘we have completed’, it’s always very welcome especially after a long process.

Failing that, the phrase ‘dinner’s ready’ is always welcome. A theme seems to be developing in my answers.

  9. What did you want to be growing up?

I’ve always loved playing sport, so I wanted to be a footballer, a cricketer or a tennis player.

  10. Tell us your best joke.

I would but unfortunately it would be far too blue and I’d like to keep my job!
