Providing care for the elderly or disabled

There may come a time when you, or someone in your family, can no longer manage without extra help.

You may need to consider:

  • Employing professional carers Having carers visit you at home means that you will get the benefits of professional care whilst maintaining your independence.
  • Sheltered housing gives you all the benefits of your own home, plus someone on hand if things go wrong.
  • Going into a residential home gives you a room of your own (or a shared one), meals, activities, and companionship. Fees are typically £750-£1,200 per week. The state will fund care once your capital reduces to a certain level, but the care provided will be basic. It is possible for relatives to top it up.
  • Going into a nursing home if you need full-time nursing care.
