More about Northwich:
Northwich lies in the heart of the stunning Cheshire Plain where the River Dane meets the River Weaver.  It’s a pretty town that prospered particularly in the 19th century when local salt mines distributed their valuable produce to cities all over the midlands via the intricate canal network.  A pioneering town in Victorian times, Northwich built the first two electric-powered swing bridges in the UK, and one of the great monuments of the canal age is the Anderton Boat Lift; completed in 1875 and still in working order, it was an impressive solution for connecting the River Trent with the River Mersey by way of a 50-foot high mechanism that carried barges up and down from one level to the other.
