How do I find out who caused the death?

In situations where a death occurs in suspicious circumstances or you believe that someone else was responsible for causing it, it is important that you make sure that the Coroner investigates it. They will in turn work with the appropriate authorities such as the Police or Health & Safety Executive to investigate how the death occurred.

If it is proven that an individual or an organisation was to blame for the death then a criminal prosecution would be likely – this would be brought by the Police or with accidents at work, by the Health & Safety Executive.

Having legal advice means you are;

  • Supported in preparing for the Inquest
  • Certain that our specialist Inquest lawyers will ensure that the Coroner follows up all relevant areas of investigation
  • Certain that evidence is taken from relevant witnesses and that appropriate expert reports are obtained
  • Confident that the Coroner is fulfils their duty to investigate

We can also make written representations to the Coroner and represent you if the Coroner calls a Pre Inquest Review Hearing – this is to discuss what evidence is ‘permissible’.

After any criminal proceedings and Inquest it may also be possible to bring a claim for compensation against the person or organisation responsible for the death. Again QualitySolicitors can advise you on how to go about this at the time.
