Sara Shires

Associate, Chartered Legal Executive, Wills, Trusts & Probate

I am a Chartered Legal Executive and have been working for Barwells since 2002.  I am a Full Accredited Member of SFE (Solicitors for the Elderly). SFE is a community of trusted advisers who are professionally highly qualified and regulated and who also have additional skills to enable them to work with older and vulnerable clients.

I obtained my Practicing Certificate from the Institute for Chartered Legal Executives in June 2016 having worked in the Private Client Department since 2003. I became an Associate of Barwells in 2022. Before obtaining my Practicing Certificate, I had moved to our Peacehaven office in 2014 to become a Practitioner.   Prior to this I was the manager to the former Head of the Private Client Department in our Eastbourne office since 2007.

I am based at our Peacehaven office and deal with Private Client matters to include the administration of Estates, preparation of Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney, Court of Protection applications, registrations of Enduring Powers of Attorney and the management of client’s affairs under either an Enduring Power of Attorney, Lasting Power of Attorney or by Court order (Deputyship).

My recent cases have included providing advice to people preparing Wills to protect vulnerable beneficiaries or to safe guard assets on a second marriage, dealing with the administration of Estates either in accordance with the terms of a person’s Will or based on the Intestacy rules many times involving Inheritance Tax and Capital Gain Tax considerations. Further I have dealt with applications to the Court of Protection for Deputyship orders and also urgent applications when the need arises to ensure that the clients financial interests are protected.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family and in particular my two young children (whose out of school activities take up a lot of our free time).  I also enjoy reading, history and music being able to play both the clarinet and cornet.
