Celebrating our Apprentices for National Apprentice Week 2018

Here at QualitySolicitors Dunn & Baker, we recognise that one type of education doesn’t necessarily suit all. We’ve been taking on apprentices for years now and continue to look for aspiring young people who want to start a career in the legal industry.

In celebration of National Apprentice Week, we thought we’d ask our Apprentices what they really think about their roles at QualitySolicitors Dunn & Baker.

Casey Spicer, Business Administration NVQ Level 2

“I decided to undertake an apprenticeship as I wasn’t sure university was for me. I have always had an interest in law but knew that apprenticeships weren’t the traditional route to a career in the legal sector. I came across QualitySolicitors Dunn & Baker and saw that they had a vacancy; I snapped it up straight away and haven’t looked back.

One thing I love about being an Apprentice is that I get all the benefits of being an employee whilst gaining qualifications. One of the hardest things has been juggling the NVQ coursework whilst completing the job I’m being paid to do.

Originally, I wanted to be a Solicitor but having been much more involved in the administration side of things I’m looking forward to pursuing a career in that direction instead!”

Katie Pretty, Business Administration NVQ Level 2

“Having A levels in Law, Sociology and Late Modern History, I wasn’t ready to give up education but I wanted to try a different learning approach. I’d already heard of QualitySolicitors Dunn & Baker’s positive reputation and really liked that they had an office so close to home.

Not only is my apprenticeship giving me sought after qualifications, it’s also allowing me to gain relevant experience in a real work environment, for example, this week I learnt how to use case management system software that’s well recognised in the legal sector.

One thing I’ve loved so far is that I am learning new skills constantly, from opening a client file to witnessing a Will being signed, every day is different – I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

Jodie Neish, Business Administration NVQ Level 2

“After completing my Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care and working at a residential care home, I found an interest in what goes on behind the scenes of a business so was delighted when I came across this apprenticeship.

I love gaining first-hand experience whilst working towards a nationally recognised qualification and I’m proud to work for such a highly recommended firm. A challenge I’ve faced is learning all the processes and terminology as this is my first role in the legal industry but I’ve already grown in confidence and am really proud of how far I’ve come so far.”

Courteney Downing, Business Administration NVQ Level 2

“I decide to undertake a career change after completing various NVQs in hairdressing and makeup and realising the beauty industry wasn’t for me. I’ve been an Office Apprentice for nearly 6 months now and it’s the best decision I ever made!

One aspect of the job I really love is that I get to learn lots of new skills on a daily basis and my confidence has grown massively as a result. I’ve struggled with nerves when it comes to dealing with the phones but I’m definitely more comfortable with them than when I first started – something I’m really proud of.

Ideally, I’ll pass my qualification next February and be taken on as a permanent administrator at QualitySolicitors Dunn & Baker.”
