A widower whose wife died of a heart attck after an NHS Direct call-handler told him to go and buy her some antacids and paracetamol after diagnosing her with acid reflux has won an undisclosed payout from the organisation.
According to the Daily Mail, Patricia Kinsey was found unconscious in her home in Wolverhampton back in 2011 by her husband, Brian. After calling 999, paramedics spent an hour trying to resuscitate her but she was later taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.
"If an ambulance had been dispatched that night, it may not have stopped her going into cardiac arrest, but at least she would have been in the best possible hands and at least stood a chance of living," Mr Kinsey was quoted by the news source as saying.
Typically, the care that people receive from the medical profession is of the highest quality, but occasionally something can go wrong, resulting in injury, disability or death.
