The online scheme was piloted last year with over 1,000 petitions issued. According to the MoJ, 9 out of 10 users were satisfied with the online service.
The President of the Family Division, Sir James Munby, has celebrated the system as a 'triumphant success'.
It is, however, important to note that the online option is only available to individuals wanting to deal with the divorce themselves – if you want a solicitor to represent you then for the time being you will still need to apply by post (although the MoJ has indicated that it is now developing an online solicitor-led application process).
Moore & Tibbits understand that for many individuals, especially perhaps those of limited means, the online application option is attractive – albeit that the not insubstantial court fee of £550 will still need to paid. There are, however, potential pitfalls in the divorce process, so that we would still recommend you book a free 30 minutes consultation with one of our experienced family law specialists, even if ultimately you decide to try dealing with the divorce yourself.
