In this blog series, we speak to staff members about how our firm has helped them develop their skills and grow a career in the legal sector. First we speak to Taya Williams, who works as a Solicitor in our Wrexham office.
My career at Hopleys GMA
"Entering the legal profession was initially a very daunting experience. However, my career development at a smaller local firm such as Hopleys GMA has proven to be the right choice for me. The firm is of a size that ensures individuals are not treated as merely another number. Colleagues are consistently supportive, genuinely committed to promoting professional growth, and always available to provide guidance in managing workloads effectively.
From work experience to full-time
Prior to being offered a permanent job, I completed work experience at Hopleys GMA in 2016, which provided valuable insight into what the firm was like and the people I would be working alongside. Following this, I was offered a part-time position as a receptionist while completing my Law and Criminology degree at the University of Liverpool. This allowed me to gain practical experience and become familiar with the firm’s operations.
I joined Hopleys GMA on a full-time basis in 2023, following the completion of the Graduate Diploma in Law and the award of a Master of Laws in Professional Legal Practice with distinction. After a few months, I was delighted to be offered a training contract in recognition of my hard work, determination and patience. During my training, I had the opportunity to work across a variety of practice areas, including family, property and employment law, which allowed me to develop a well-rounded understanding of the legal sector. The firm’s friendly environment has been crucial throughout this period, with colleagues providing supervision, mentorship, and encouragement, enabling me to grow both professionally and personally.
From the outset of my training contract, I believed it was important to remain open-minded about which department I would qualify into. However, family law did become a particular interest of mine largely because every case and client is different. Being able to help people through difficult periods and see them in a better place, knowing I had a part in that transformation, reinforced that this area of law suits me.
Qualifying as a solicitor
In December 2025, I marked the exciting yet challenging milestone of becoming a newly qualified solicitor. Over the past two years, my confidence has grown significantly, and I have progressively taken on greater responsibility while actively working to reduce my reliance on supervisors. I manage day-to-day cases, draft a variety of legal documents, communicate effectively with clients, and guide them through often complex and sensitive family issues.
Hopleys GMA has played a key role in my career development since my time as a college student, and I now look forward to continuing my legal career with the firm, eager to embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead."
