There is no disputing that the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LASPO) fundamentally changed the legal aid system in England & Wales. Put simply, thousands of people who were eligible for legal aid on 31st March 2013 suddenly became ineligible the very next day. The government argues that the cuts were necessary and fair as the country sought to get a grip of its finances. Others argue that the cuts brought about by LASPO represent an unjustifiable attack on the basic principle of access to justice.
It is estimated that almost two million adults in England and Wales have been victims of domestic abuse in the past year, with 95 people having been killed by current or former partners in 2016-17.
