Our Protector Plus will is for those who have slightly more complicated circumstances than the Protector will covers – this will is sometimes referred to by law firms as a ‘complex’ will. You can do everything the Protector will provides for – leave your assets to who you choose, appoint a Guardian for any children etc – but also cover more specific and ‘non-standard’ requests. Protector Plus
In short
Protector Plus is our fixed-fee will for people whose circumstances are slightly more complicated than a standard will covers — using trusts to control how and when someone inherits, protect a vulnerable beneficiary, or provide for a partner without disinheriting your children. Details
Protector Plus includes everything in our standard Protector will, plus the ability to handle more specific, "non-standard" requests using trusts — the same legal mechanism explained on our trusts page.
What Protector Plus can do that a standard will can't
- Gift property to someone for their lifetime only (a "life interest trust") — for example, leaving your house to a partner to live in for the rest of their life, with the property passing to your children afterwards
- Delay inheritance until a beneficiary reaches a certain age — useful if you're leaving money to children or grandchildren and don't want them to inherit outright at 18
- Exclude an expected beneficiary — for example, a spouse or child you don't want to inherit, with the reasoning recorded to reduce the risk of a successful Inheritance Act 1975 claim
- Provide ongoing care for a beneficiary with a disability without affecting their entitlement to means-tested benefits, through a properly structured trust
A worked example
Leaving a house to a second spouse "for life," with the property passing to children from a first marriage afterwards, is one of the most common reasons people choose Protector Plus. It protects both the surviving spouse's home and the children's eventual inheritance — something a simple will cannot do on its own.
