BBC Panorama | Special educational needs families and the fight for education

Last night’s BBC Panorama took a first hand insight into the dramatic implications the coronavirus has had on so many families supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

With many services, support groups and day centres cancelled due to COVID, families were suddenly left with limited or in some cases no support of any form. The repercussions of the change of routine, structure and support have had a huge knock-on effect for many children and the long term impact of this is yet to be seen.

For some viewers, the documentary was difficult and uncomfortable to watch but for others it reflected and mirrored their daily struggle for the past few months. The documentary was a stark and honest portrayal of life with a child with SEN.

"We do feel that local authorities got off a little lightly in the programme – any reference to ‘bending the rules’ probably actually means ‘breaking the law’. It is so important to be aware of your rights and the rights of your child" Moore & Tibbits Education Law Team
