I have been a Legal Assistant for over 20 years and am part of the Health and Community Care Team, based at our Westgate House office.
I am very approachable and a definite ‘people person’ - which is essential in the areas that I specialise in, which are:
Over the past five years the changes in adult health and social care has meant that more people than ever need accurate up-to-date, information and representation – often at a time of personal crisis – to navigate the care system. Each person’s circumstances are different, and it is so important to listen carefully to my clients to ensure that my advice and support is tailored to them to enable them to make informed decisions.
One of the biggest areas of my work is NHS continuing healthcare. This is funding for care, paid for by the NHS, for individuals who are identified as having a ‘primary health need’. The assessment process can be lengthy and stressful for families, who often feel that they are involved in a battle over the money, rather than their loved ones care needs. I gather information about my client’s needs (accessing medical and care records) and analyse this in relation to the legal framework that sets the eligibility criteria. My expertise ensures that they have the best possible chance at eligibility, and know what to expect from the process itself.
In some cases, due to the difficulties people can have even getting into the system, I actively initiate and monitor the assessment process to prevent my clients from falling between the gaps in services and to ease some of the pressure they are under regarding any possible ‘delayed discharge’ from hospital. I also provide representation at assessment meetings which families often find very daunting. This is not an easy time for my clients, and it is so important to provide realistic advice and a steady source of support.
