With London 2012 successfully underway Craig Holt, Chief Executive of QualitySolicitors, explains your rights to getting those last minute holiday requests approved so you can follow Team GB.

"With the Olympic Games on home turf and support for Team GB uniting the nation, many of us want to spend as much time cheering them on as possible. Sadly however, there is still work to be done and employers faced with an influx of last minute annual leave requests to watch the Games can legally just say no. If an employee chooses to take the time off anyway, they could face disciplinary action which could result in dismissal. The same goes for employees who don't ask for the leave and then fail turn up for work.

"Instead, we suggest that anyone wanting that last minute day off talks to their employer and tries to reach a suitable compromise. It's not too late to ask if you can adjust your working hours so that you don't miss your favourite event or even suggest swapping shifts with colleagues. Watching Team GB battle it out for Gold may be exciting but it will be short lived if the long term cost is your job"
