Do I have to let a bailiff in?

In most situations, you don’t have to let a bailiff into your home or even answer the door to them.

The only time a bailiff can force their way into your home is to collect serious debts including criminal fines, VAT or income tax. Before allowing a bailiff into your home, ask to see proof of their identity and a breakdown of their fees.

A bailiff is not allowed to threaten you or try to break into your home; if they do, they could be breaking the law and you should seek further advice from the police or one of our expert solicitors.
