How long can I be detained?

This depends upon which section of the Mental Health Act you have been detained under. For example, you could be detained for 72 hours whilst a doctor makes their assessment or you could be detained for up to 28 days to allow further treatment or assessments. Following the 28-day period, medical professionals may decide that the detention should be extended to six months. If you’d like some advice about this please give us a call on 0808 304 7229.
