What are the likely outcomes from an Inquest?

The Coroner or jury will need to give a verdict which is usually referred to as a ‘short verdict’ – it can be a longer verdict that explains what happened but it is often one of the following verdicts:

  • Natural causes
  • Accidental death: An unintended or unexpected consequence
  • Death by misadventure: An unintended or unexpected consequence but with some criticism of the act (or failure to act)
  • Open verdict: where the cause of death cannot be established on the evidence
  • Industrial disease
  • Neglect: gross failure to provide adequate food, drink or medical attention
  • Suicide
  • Drugs: the person was on drugs
  • Lawful killing: the main example is death caused by self-defence
  • Unlawful killing: the person considered responsible will not be named
