What is an Inquest and why is it important?

An Inquest is a public enquiry held by a Coroner to investigate a sudden, unexpected or violent death. The purpose of any Inquest is to answer four questions:

  1. The identity of the person who has died
  2. When they died
  3. Where they died
  4. How did they die

It is important to note that the purpose is not to find out who was to blame for the death although any Inquest by its very nature may throw some light onto who may be to blame.
