What does ‘Opening the Inquest’ mean?

This is a very short procedure that can often take a matter of minutes where a Coroner formally announces that he will be investigating a death.

It is where the Coroner confirms that the medical examination has taken place and that the body can be released to the family's chosen funeral company, so that the funeral can be arranged. It is also where authority is given for an interim death certificate to be prepared - this is often needed by the family to pass on to organisations such as banks and mortgage companies.
