What does a Coroner do?

The Coroner is an independent person with responsibility for investigating sudden, unexpected or violent deaths.

Coroners work closely with the police and other authorities and can make important decisions that help understand what happened. For example, they have the power to arrange a Post-Mortem or Autopsy – this is an independent medical examination of the body to help identify the medical cause of death and is carried out by someone called a Pathologist.
