Working nights when pregnant – is it allowed?

Pregnant workers can work night shifts, but only if doing so poses no risk to them or their baby. If a doctor provides a certificate stating you can’t work nights or an employee risk assessment reveals any potential risk, your employer should offer you alternative suitable day work. If this is not possible, you should be suspended on full pay for as long as necessary to keep you and your baby safe.

Many employees stop working nights in late pregnancy before going on maternity leave. If you have any concerns about risks to you or your baby, you should speak to your employer or HR department in the first instance, then speak to your union representative or a legal professional if necessary.
